Re:  Orange County Conspiracy Charges in Amb. Michael Oren Matter at U.C. Irvine

Dear Mr. Rakauckas:

A number of us across America commend you and your investigative staff for the charges filed against 11 students at both U.C. Irvine and U.C. Riverside for disruption of Israeli  Ambassador Michael Oren’s speech at U.C. Irvine on February 8, 2009.  The prosecution of this matter will send an important  message  about protection of Free Speech under our First Amendment whether in an academic setting or in a public venue.

The Open Letter to you posted in the Orange County Register by a coalition of Muslim, Jewish, Christian and First Amendment defense groups has a most disturbing message. As pointed out in a New English Review, Iconoclast blog post we did this weekend,Andrew Whitehead of the blog Anti-CAIR and Orange County resident , Dee Sterling commented about the veiled threat of capitulation by your office in the face of possible violence.
That is a direct threat agianst our legal institutions and our Constitution.  Doubtless, those threats will not deter your office from completing prosecution on the charges filed against these students who disrupted Amb. Oren’s speech at U.C. Irvine.

You will note that we sent our blog post to the Hon. Peter T. King, Chairman and Mr. Adam Paulson, Legislative Director of the U.S. House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee regarding the Orange County matter as background for the Committee’s forthcoming hearings regarding radical Islamic elements and the Muslim Brotherhood in America.

We thank you for your professional conduct of the investigation leading to the filed charges in this matter.  Whatever the outcome of the prosecution, by taking up this matter your office  is defending the Free Speech rights of all Americans guaranteed under the First Amendment of our Constitution.

Sincerely

Adam:

Earlier this week, I sent you a panel discussion on the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt published by the New English Review (NER), Is The Muslim Brotherhood Rising in Egypt? .  Yesterday I posted on our blog, The Iconoclast this disturbing story about the recent handing down of charges after a grand jury investigation by the Orange County, California District Attorney against 11 Muslim students at UC Irvine and UC Riverside who disrupted Israel Ambassador Michael Oren’s talk at UCIrvine virtually a year ago on Feb. 8th.  On Friday, February 4th, a coalition composed of Muslim Brotherhood fronts, CAIR and MPAC, the ACLU, liberal Jewish and Christian groups and the leftist National Lawyers Guild published an Open Letter to the Orange county DA in the Orange County Register newspaper suggesting that if these students were prosecuted then violence might occur. This is tantamount to a violation of both state and federal constitutions and outright intimidation by the oldest of Muslim Brotherhood groups in the US, the Muslim Students Association founded in 1961 with over 1,500 college and high school chapters across America.  Read what I wrote about the Muslim Brotherhood threat here in this country given the UC Irvine conspiracy charges filed by the Orange County DA against these Muslim students and pass this along to Rep. King for his reading. Perhaps this and other matters of Muslim Brotherhood intimidation on college campuses throughout America should be added to the topic to be addresssed during your upcoming hearings in March.

Many thanks for what Rep. King and you are doing in organizing the upcoming hearings on radical Islam’s homegrown terrorist threat to America.

Sincerely,

UCIrvine Muslim students protest Orange County  DA Charges
Orange County, California  District Attorney Tony Rackauckas announced charges February 3rd against 11 Muslim students eight from UCIrvine, 3 from UC Riverside, who disrupted a speech by Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren on the UCIrvine campus on February 8, 2010.
Here is the Orange County Register (OCR) report:
“This case is being filed because there was an organized attempt to squelch the speaker, who was invited to speak to a group at UCI,” District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said in a statement. “These defendants meant to stop this speech and stop anyone else from hearing his ideas, and they did so by disrupting a lawful meeting. This is a clear violation of the law and failing to bring charges against this conduct would amount to a failure to uphold the Constitution.”
Each defendant is charged with one misdemeanor count of conspiracy to disturb a meeting and one misdemeanor count of the disturbance of a meeting, according to a news release from the District Attorney’s Office. If convicted, each faces a sentence that could include probation with community service or fines or up to six months in jail.
They are scheduled to be arraigned on the charges March 11.
The defendants are: Mohamed Mohy-Eldeen Abdelgany, 23; Khalid Gahgat Akari, 19; Aslam Abbasi Akhtar, 23; Joseph Tamim Haider, 23; Taher Mutaz Herzallah, 21; Hakim Nasreddine Kebir, 20; Shaheen Waleed Nassar, 21; Mohammad Uns Qureashi, 19; Ali Mohammad Sayeed, 23; Osama Ahmen Shabaik, 22; and Asaad Mohamedidris Traina, 19.
While eight students charged are from UCI, Akari, Herzallah and Nassar were students at UC Riverside.
