White House Watch: Clinton, Trump Tied

Tuesday, November 01, 2016

One week before Election Day, the race for the presidency is all tied up.

The latest Rasmussen Reports White House Watch national telephone and online survey finds Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump each with 44% support among Likely U.S. Voters. Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson has five percent (5%) of the vote, while Green Party nominee Jill Stein earns two percent (2%). Another two percent (2%) like some other candidate in the race, and four percent (4%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Women favor Clinton by five points; Trump is ahead among men by six.

Clinton remains well ahead among those under 40, while Trump has double-digit leads among voters in older age groups. Younger voters remain less certain of their vote than their elders are with a week to go.

Clinton and Trump earn 79% support from voters in their respective parties and comparable support from those in the opposing party. The GOP nominee has a 13-point advantage among voters not affiliated with either of the major parties. Unaffiliateds are less certain of their vote, though, than Republicans and Democrats are.

Whites are more certain of their vote than blacks and other minorities are. Trump leads among whites; Clinton remains well ahead in the other two groups.

Clinton and her campaign have been attacking the FBI since Friday’s announcement, but the Obama White House yesterday defended the federal agency’s action as appropriate. Sixty-two percent (62%) of voters have a favorable opinion of the FBI, including 46% with a Very Favorable one.

In a survey less than two weeks ago but before the latest FBI announcement, 70% said Clinton’s mishandling of classified information is important to their vote for president, and 53% disagreed with the FBI’s decision in July not to seek a criminal indictment against her.

Fortunately for both major party candidates who have been beset with questions about their honesty and integrity, most voters put their policy positions ahead of their character.

Most voters see America as a divided nation and only expect things to get worse over the next year no matter who the next president is.
