This pilot is HIGHLY qualified. Not only is he rated for the Cessna, but he is rated for multiengine & gliders. He is also rated as both a commercial pilot AND an instructor.
I don’t know what you are implying with his glider rating, unless you want to point out how much experience he has flying and his love for all types of aircraft. Based purely on his ratings, this is a pilot that I would feel safe with.

Call me silly, but I keep thinking how easy it would be for someone to shut the engines off, glide the plane down for a water landing with someone in diving gear waiting under the water.
But, maybe I have just seen too many James Bond films.

First get all the facts to how she died and then go from there.

To: DavidL…well, let me give an example of what (I) believe here…in that the late Singer, John Denver, lost his life in a glider!
Now, I don’t know all the particulars of his death, but was he also qualified to pilot a regular plane? How did he die that way?
I personally don’t know the background of the pilot for the Cessna, but if he was that qualified, how is it that he had plane trouble?
Or was that part of the plan?
(Can you see my point here?) If this guy was that experienced, this should not have happened! Which means…he was either in on it or they pulled a fast one on him, too!!!
And since he has a Japanezz-(sp) name, could it be that he is familiar with Yamamoto? And that this was all planned?
Fuddy, supposedly, had a life preserver on and so how is it that she could just sink into the ocean? You can’t! Unless, there was someone under water to pull her down? or she was taken down by a shark?

As somebody who had a pilots license (I didn’t renew because it was just too expensive and I no longer traveled enough to make it worthwhile) … so let me comment from perspective of experience.
1. Yes, he was absolutely qualified to pilot a “regular plane”, in this case the single-engined Cessna. This is not open to interpretation.
2. Anybody can have plane trouble at any time. No point going into everything that can possibly happen. Even asking this question indicates you aren’t up on even the basics.
3. The NTSB will determine root cause. Making guesses is pointless, it will come out. They are quite meticulous. This is one of the few things the government does well. They publish the results of all crashes and pilots (especially commercial ones) read the briefings to learn from other peoples mistakes.
4. Are you serious, how does his name or race have anything to do with anything? In fact, his name looks more like native Hawaiian to me, not “Japanezz” as you wrote. That makes him a U.S. native born citizen unless he is 55+ years old.
5. FAA approved PFDs (personal floatation devices) don’t always save lives. What if she didn’t put it on properly, or she was injured, or she was in shock, or choked to death due to splashing seawater? Sure somebody could have killed her but I find that unlikely that it happened in the water with other people watching.
Bottom line, the pilot has outstanding qualifications and experience as a professional pilot and instructor, as well as somebody who does recreational flying. I can’t imagine this being pilot error.

according to C Philip Holstein she was not injured, she had her life vest on, was holding hands with Yamamoto and was waiting for the rescue helicopter to lift her. How did she die? the pilot was dismayed that she died

Correction to David (above): IMO, both names
are Japanese ancestry derived, even if they
both were born in Hawaii. Not typical Hawaiian
names, per se, prima facie. Must check.
