Dear Orly,
I would like to pass on portions of a newspaper opinion letter about this subject:
Excerpt:
Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a massive free trade agreement often called “NAFTA on steroids.” It is a multinational pact that would restrict the ability of the U.S. and local governments to legislate in the public interest. … it is being negotiated in secret by 600 corporate lobbyists …
Excerpt:
In addition to off-shoring jobs, TPP could ban “America first” government spending provisions, end Internet freedom and overturn laws designed to protect the public from destructive and predatory corporate practices. …[it] is a means of minimizing controversy over such items by forcing an up-or-down vote with no amendments and limited debate.
Excerpt:
Members of Congress can view some documents only in the presence of industry lobbyists and without taking notes. Details of how transnational corporations can sue governments for damages due to profits “lost” as a result of laws passed in the public interest are classified, as if matters of national security. Consequently, members of [Congress] are not allowed to reveal what they have learned with the public.
Excerpt:
… it is unlikely we will be able to readily understand the thousands of pages of legalese it is expected to include, especially if the press continues to ignore the issue. Only a vigorous and public debate in Congress will get the truth out. That’s why we have to derail Fast Track …
Excerpt:
Those of us who have studied what is known about TPP and Fast Track want to share what we have learned with others who might want to have an informed opinion about the issue.
