The rabbis of the Talmud considered marriage a holy contract, and the dissolution of marriage an unholy act. They quote the prophet Malachi, “. . .the Lord has been witness between you and your wife of your youth against whom you have dealt treachorously, though she is your companion, the wife of your covenant” (2:14). They add in Sanhedrin (22a), “Even [G-d] shares tears when anyone divorces his wife.”
In biblical law a husband has the right to divorce his wife, but a wife cannot initiate a divorce. About 1,000 years ago, Rebbeinu Gershom ben Yehuda (965-1028) decreed that a husband could no longer divorce his wife without her consent. This decision was accepted as binding by European Jewry.
A Jewish religious court can compel the husband to grant a divorce when there is a just case, such as when a husband refuses to have marital relations, when he does not provide adequately for her support, when he is unfaithful, when he is a wife-beater, or when he has a loathsome disease, such as leprosy, etc.
Because I am Roman Catholic I always like to go back to the source of our religion which is Judaism. The reason rabbi’s and priests and all religious people are interested in this, is for the terrible reason is every day when they go to work they get to see the wreckage and the toll that this takes on the family-especially the children. I come from a big family and I can not tell you how many refugee children we had in the house (brothers and sisters friends). These children never felt comfortable in their own homes, and God help the children from multiple divorces-one of the mothers-8 divorces. Too many step fathers for that little girl to handle. I think they felt comfortable at our house- stability and insanity (always some unique situation to laugh at). All the kids knew the rules of the house were the same for everybody. My father was an equal opportunity “yeller” whoever was naughty got the lecture and if work needed to be done everybody had to pitch in no exceptions. Mom added more water to the soup. God must have been a big presence in our house adding a lot of heavenly help.
There is no way all these kids could have been fed and cared for without on going miracles.

Staying in a bad marriage causes terrible psychological damage to both parties. Better to separate and heal. I think no fault divorce is good. The state should not be forcing people to live together abusing each other.

The problem is definitely a spiritual problem. But it is not the job of the state to fix spiritual problems.

The fact that the divorce rate is high might mean that the people are healing their spiritual problem.
