Hillary Clinton defends Bowe Bergdahl exchange
Hillary Clinton defended President Obama’s move to free a long-held U.S. prisoner of war from Afghanistan in exchange for five men being held at Guantanamo Bay in a speech on the outskirts of Denver on Monday night.

“This young man, whatever the circumstances, was an American citizen — is an American citizen — was serving in our military,” Clinton said in response to a question about Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, whose release was announced Saturday.

“The idea that you really care for your own citizens and particularly those in uniform, I think is a very noble one.”

Speaking in Broomfield, Clinton added she wouldn’t doubt those currently in government. But she also said other places such as Israel have made such deals. And she framed it in the context of her upcoming State Department memoir, “Hard Choices,” saying this was one of those moments.
Obama has come under fire for the Bergdahl prisoner exchange. Republicans have slammed him for negotiating with the Taliban.
“You don’t want to see these five prisoners go back to combat,” she said, according to the Associated Press. “There’s a lot that you don’t want to have happen. On the other hand you also don’t want an American citizen, if you can avoid it, especially a solider, to die in captivity. I think we have a long way to go before we really know how this is going to play out.”
Those were her first comments on the deal since it was announced.
