Why you should check your blood pressure as one of the ways to avoid coronavirus
By Dr. Orly Taitz, ESQ
I remember reading that men are more susceptible to Coronavirus than women. I remember thinking, what is the reason? Why children do not get sick, while they do get sick with other respiratory diseases?
First thing that comes to mind is that this is a respiratory disease, more men smoke, than women, their lungs are damaged by years of smoking and that leads to higher mortality. Second reason I thought of is the fact that it could be x-chromosome related mechanism. As you know Women have to x-chromosomes, men have x and y. So, if there is a mutation in one x-chromosome, women have a second line of defense, second x-chromosome and men do not. As you know, there are medical conditions, such as hemophilia, Duchenne muscular dystrophy and others where women are just carriers of the disease, but men get sick. This was my second thought, maybe something x-chromosome related. But then I read this article at lnk https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-09/top-virus-doctor-says-high-blood-pressure-is-major-death-risk. The article at link provides an interview with a Chinese expert, who was at the front lines of the epidemic in Wuhan.
This Chinese expert stated that half of the people who get seriously sick and pass away from COVID 19, have high blood pressure. So, that clicked, that explained why more men pass away from the disease, why children do not get sick, but the risk increases with age. It all became clear.
Hypertension (high blood pressure) is usually not seen among children. Tendency to have high blood pressure goes up with age, usually after 50 and more men tend to have high blood pressure than women.
I believe, we need CDC to conduct an urgent study of exact correlation between the virus and high blood pressure and specifically how effective are preventive and therapeutic measures in keeping the blood pressure low, we need more urgent studies, whether the high blood pressure leads to flooding of lungs in interstitional bilateral pneumonia that we see with COVID and whether reduction of blood pressure would prevent this deadly pneumonia or will alleviate the symptoms if one already has it.
However, meanwhile, my advice, is to use common sense approach and to add to other known measures, a simple measure of buying a blood pressure monitor. You can buy it in any pharmacy. I have one in my office and one in my home for me and my husband. Check your blood pressure daily. If you have a high blood pressure, make sure to take proper medications to reduce and control your blood pressure. I will not recommend any specific medications, I would leave it to your family doctor.
I also believe that US should follow the lead of the state of Israel and impose 14 days quarantine on all arrivals from abroad, including citizen returns from abroad.
Even China now demands 14 days quarantine for all foreign arrivals. We have to do it. We have to add South Korea and Italy to temporary travel ban until the epidemic there ends.
We have to recommend quarantine for elderly, no visitors in retirement homes, as the average age of people who get sick, is 60, and the average age of people who pass away from the disease, is 80.
Lastly, it is time to ban travel to and from the hot spots in the US. For example, Washington state became a hot spot and it is prudent to stop travel to and from Washington state
