Actually, Dr. Taitz, the declining box office numbers have more to do with changing technology than a paradigm shift in the tastes of the public. One hundred years ago, people went to vaudeville shows for entertainment. Suddenly movies appeared on the scene and vaudeville became extinct. Movies prevailed as entertainment until the advent television at which point the movie industry had to reinvent itself resulting in the downfall of the “studio system”. Now in the new century, we have reached a stage where we no longer need to go to a theater to see a movie: just wait a month and view it on Netflix. Thanks to new technology, film buffs such as myself no longer need to leave the comfort of our homes to see movies. Indeed, I can download thousands of foreign films, classics, silent movies or documentaries at any time of the day. Thirty five years ago, when I lived in Los Angeles, I had to depend on the fare of the revival houses or foreign film theaters to see cinematic classics. Today, all I have to do is type in a title and I can see it instantly.

As for your assertion that Hollywood does not represent real life, may I remind you that during the Great Depression, movies were the one industry which thrived as it allowed Americans an escape from the struggles of everyday life. Few people want to watch a movie to be reminded of reality.

that might be correct as well.
Here is another interesting fact: most TV networks are doing poorly, while FOX is doing relatevely well. So, maybe it is not the change in technology but the content which turns people away from the alphabet networks, CNN and MSNBC. After all, their technology is the same as FOX’s

I have to agree, Orly. Most TV sitcoms portray cheating spouses and rampant homosexuality. I watch very little TV.

On the other hand, Dr. Taitz, one must recognize that Fox represents a different paradigm from the other three broadcast networks. Its programming consist of solely news and opinion whereas the other three broadcast networks provide news, opinion, information and entertainment. CNN and MSNBC have viewers due to the fact that they are cable networks, not broadcast networks. Broadcast networks such as NBC, CBS, ABC and Fox, tend to attract a wide range of viewers whereas cable channels attract a specific demographic.

But back to the original thesis of this post: the delivery of movies to viewers is rapidly changing. AS much as I love the thrill of going to the movies ( and mourn the demise of the palatial movie houses), I have accepted that within the next generation movie theaters will cease to exist. Instead of going to a large auditorium with hundreds of strangers, we will watch Hollywood’s latest in the privacy of our own homes.

Well, here’s my view: …I enjoyed going to films at an early age. Then, the films became so filled with garbage, and the prices became too high, that I had to stop wasting my $$!

And the younger set, in Hollywood, is not the prime-time actors and actresses that permeated our film industry, from way back!

When we lose the likes of: John Wayne, Bing Crosby, Elvis, Walter Brennan, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and, yes, Joan Rivers, and many others, it just isn’t the same any more!

Now, we still have some great names in the business: Clint Eastwood, James Woods, Tom Selleck, James Garner, and others, a lot of the population of the real talent is gone…and these were people who didn’t do drugs, and get arrested every other weekend…!
