The independence vote is rife with flaws and is likely to only serve to stoke tensions in eastern Ukraine. 7:27pm UK, Saturday 10 May 2014.
Tomorrow is the referendum in Ukraine. If majority will vote to stay within the Ukraine, the separatists will likely continue fighting. However it is more likely they will get the majority in Donetsk and Lugansk, the most valuable industrial zone in Ukraine, known for its’ coal mines and steel making. The Eastern Ukrainians will pronounce the area to be independent, will pronounce republics of Donetsk and Lugansk with 6 million people population in all and will seek admission to UN and other international organizations. It is also highly likely that the western backed regime in Kiev will move troops against Donetsk and Lugansk. The republics will probably sign a pack for mutual security with Russia and Russia will move its’ troops claiming that people spoke, that these areas are independent and entitled to protection.
At this point the question is, whether NATO and/or US will send troops to fight Donetsk and Lugansk.
What’s more, this probably will not be the end of the story. Russian media reported yesterday an explosion in the metro in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. Putin will likely move further towards an important port of Odessa and possibly Kiev itself.
So, even if the US does not send the troops to fight Donetsk and Lugansk, there is a bigger question,. whether US will send troops to protect Kiev.
Moreover, all of these developments are being watched by other former Soviet republics. US has already quietly retreated from Kyrgyzstan. Kazakhstan is in Russian sphere of influence, so is Belarus. Not long ago Biden visited Lithuania, but it seems that the government there was not too impressed by Biden, as they signed an agreement with Russia receiving Russian gas at a reduced price. We do not know what Lithuania promised Putin in exchange, but it is quiet likely that with a wink and a nod Lithuania promised not to get involved in the fighting in Ukraine.
I am wondering if all of this was meant and planned when Obama was recorded promising Medvedev that after the re-election he will be more flexible. The question is, how far this flexibility will go, will it reach Alaska? And don’t you think that with all of this going on in Europe, it would be nice if we finally would find one honest judge, one judge with a backbone who would order discovery so that the whole nation and the whole world will know, what we already know about Obama, aka Soetoro, aka Soebarkah, aka Bounel, aka…
