State health director dies in plane crash off Molokai
A top Hawaii official is dead following a plane crash off Molokai.
Officials say state Health Director Loretta Fuddy died at the scene.
KHON2 has footage inside a Makani Kai Air Cessna, during a prior trip from Kalaupapa to Honolulu.
On Wednesday, one crashed in waters a half mile off of the north shore of Molokai. Maui Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard quickly got to the scene.
“They rescued eight people, who got out of the plane. Difficult conditions as it was off shore in the water, a couple hours before dark. Rapid response from Kahului with [a] rescue helicopter the Shoreside Company was on the cliff side spotting and relaying info,” said Capt. Terry Seelig, Honolulu Fire Department.
One of the passengers even swam to shore to try to get help. But not everyone got out alive. One person died in the tragic crash.
“That person remained in the fuselage of the plane. Not much details. Always a difficult situation when you can’t get everyone out, and unfortunately that was the case here,” Capt. Seelig said.
The Cessna Grand Caravan departed Kalaupapa at about 3:35 p.m. Wednesday. Makani Kai Air says the pilot made no radio calls that he was in trouble before the crash.
Another pilot in the air spotted the wreckage and survivors wearing life vests. They called it in to the Molokai Airport tower.
“Kalaupapa is a unique area and radio communications cell phone coverage. So we have no information if any calls were made out of there. [There] was an aircraft real close by circling above, so it was able to be on scene and it was reported to Molokai Tower. And that’s how he got our information, basically,” said Makani Kai Air President Richard Schuman.
Nine people were onboard when the plane took off. One person was pronounced dead, three were flown to Honolulu and taken by ambulance to the Queen’s Medical Center. Another three stayed on Molokai and were hospitalized. The rest did not need any medical help.
Makani Kai Air did not want to release the name of its pilot at this time. We do know he has been with the company for a number of years and is a former Aloha Airlines pilot.
Now the FAA wants to talk to him to learn what went wrong.

The rescue was done by the Coast Guard and Maui Fire Department, I believe.
Capt. Terry Seelig, Honolulu Fire Department – which was not involved.
Maybe you can ask Seelig to verify or explain his statement.

Immediately after the crash, another private aircraft was at the scene. This aircraft was then relived by a Coast Guard aircraft.
There are two Coast Guard stations on Molakai that are within 5 miles of the crash site. Why did it take 1-1/2 hours for the rescue?
Has a copy of the Coast Guard report been requested?
Since the accident happened on Molakai, why isn’t the Molaki Sheriff in charge of the investigation?
Who requested that Fuddy be cremated?
Why is Maui coroner involved when accident happened on Molaki?
Have these questions and other questions raised in previous comments been sent to the Molaki Sheriff?
Will coroner be taking DNA samples and verifying dental records?
There are more questions than answers. Why the rush to cremate?

A U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer describes the crash scene as ‘surreal’
Rescue swimmer Pj Ornot first spotted State Health Director Loretta Fuddy. He touched and shook her but with no response protocol meant move on.
rescue swimmer Mark Peer….
The next person he retrieved was one the first rescuer had to pass up — Director Fuddy.
“She was unresponsive at which point I checked for a pulse, which I couldn’t find,” said Peer.

Orly, if the body of Loretta Fuddy remained in the aircraft how could there be talk of her autopsy report? Has the wreckage be lifted yet?

The fuselage remains so far on the bottom of the ocean. Then whose body was autopsied and soon will be buried?!!!

That sounds as if she had been “re-inserted,” post factum, into the fuselage.

How could her body have “remained in the fuselage” if the plane sank before any help arrived? The plane still hasn’t been recovered.

In any government coverup what you get is a flood of misinformation….a la the JFK murder,Sandy Hook killings in Connecticut, etc. This is by design so that any honest investigator is thrown off the track and then gives up. I believe that is what’s going on now in this case.

Good point, truly. Also how did YAMAMOTO “hold on” to Fuddy and then say “she released her grasp.”
Who was holding on to whom?
Or did he let go of her and then blame her “release of grasp” for the event?
Sounds quite incongruous!

no

How many times have I told you to KEEP YOUR FUCKING NOSE OUT OF THIS!? There WAS no autopsy. There WILL BE no autopsy.
FUDDY WASN’T EVEN ON THE PLANE! She was terminated two days before the flight that “crashed”.
If you know what’s good for you you’ll stick to drills and extractions. Because you won’t like the kind of “drilling” and “extraction” that WE do.

Is it Holstein or Hollstein?
