(f) Suspension of entry or imposition of restrictions by President
Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.

I found interesting research on the 1952 law pertaining to prohibition of immigration of Islam. Quoting the column,

The Immigration and Nationality Act passed June 27, 1952 revised the laws relating to immigration, naturalization, and nationality for the United States.
That act, which became Public Law 414, established both the law and the intent of Congress regarding the immigration of Aliens to the US and remains in effect today. Among the many issues it covers, one in particular, found in Chapter 2 Section 212, is the prohibition of entry to the US if the Alien belongs to an organization seeking to overthrow the government of the United States by “force, violence, or other unconstitutional means.”

Mr. Donald J. Trump comment or statement about banning Muslim entry into the United States were correct and constitutional according to Title 8 of the United States Code, Section 1182 (Inadmissible Aliens) under paragraph (f) “Suspension of entry or imposition of restrictions by President”. Section 1182 states the following: “Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate”.
The word Muslim refers to the name of people who followed the teaching of the prophet Muhammed or the religion called Islam. Because Mr. Donald J. Trump used the word Muslim (class of people or alien)in his statement, it is not against the first amendment as far as religion is concern. If Mr. Trump used the word Islam or religion called Islam, it is against the first amendment of the US Constitution. Mr. Trump statement was referring to Muslim alien or Muslim immigrant and NOT the religion called Islam.
Therefore, Mr. Trump statement of banning the Muslim people(any alien or of any class of alien) entry into the US for period of time is constitutional and Mr. Trump is very much qualified to be President of the United States.

Democratic President Franklin Roosevelt rounded up and put German-Americans, Italian-Americans and Japanese-Americans in interment camps during WWII — and was lauded for it.
Democratic President Jimmy Carter banned Iranians from entry during the Iran hostage crisis — and was lauded for it.
Republican candidate for president Donald Trump says we should ban Muslims from entry until we figure out what’s going on — and has been disparaged for it.
